50 States and DC ranked by Zombie Apocalypse survivability
34. New Mexico
New Mexico is a beautiful state loaded with tons of Native American history, and when civilization falls apart it’s always a good idea to look to cultures like the Pueblo and Navajo people, who called the Americas home before anyone else, to see how they lived and follow their lead. They knew how to live off the land successfully throughout time, and so a lot can be learned.
When it comes to places to go to flee the zombies, you’ll want to stay away from the Carlsbad Caverns unless you can figure out a way to keep the zombies out while also finding a way to keep them from preventing your own escape. (However, if you can figure out a way to do this, you might have a great place to stay)
Santa Fe’s Spanish colonial houses would make excellent shelters, and the solid walls will offer natural insulation from the heat and cold that come over the summer and winter.
People who seek shelter in New Mexico when the zombies come will have to get creative when it comes to food thanks to the proximity of the desert. The gorgeous Sangre de Cristo Mountains will offer places to hunt and fish, but you’ll need to set up a system of crops to ensure that you have enough food when summer comes.
