30. Connecticut

Connecticut residents have the highest per-capita income according to the last census, and this might be helpful to the waves of survivors who come along after the zombies clear out most of the population. The fact is that people with money tend to have nice houses, and that means there will be nice places to take up residence. Block off the first floor of the first house you find and live on the upper floors. If you can find a house with lots of land around it, so much the better. Build a fence and live off the land.

If you find yourself on Long Island Sound, you might be able to find a place to stay at Yale University. The Ivy League school has been around forever and it’s a veritable fortress. It’s also home to the distinguished Peabody Museum of Natural History, which will be a wonderful place to gather weapons and establish a home base.

Connecticut is rare in that there aren’t any huge cities like you’d find in other states, so you won’t have to worry about running into traffic jams the way you would in New York. However, that also means you have to think about gathering supplies and being out in the open with zombies, so make sure you go out on supply runs ready to defend yourself.
