Lydia is a real problem for The Walking Dead survivors
By Sonya Iryna
Whether or not it was a good idea to liberate Lydia from Alpha now it’s done and the survivors on The Walking Dead need to figure out what to do with her. Our panel debates Lydia’s fate.
The Walking Dead survivors really need to figure out what to do with Lydia. Daryl was right that they can’t take her back to the Hilltop because that would put the Hilltop directly in Alpha’s crosshairs. But that might happen anyway, because now Lydia is gone and Alpha knows that Henry, who was at the Hilltop, had something to do with it. Whether the Hilltop is prepared for war or not they’re going to get a fight. And there might not be any safe place for Lydia.
Michonne is most likely not going to allow Lydia to stay at Alexandria when she wouldn’t take in Magna, Yumiko, Connie, Kelly, and Luke who weren’t running from a ruthless murderer leading a horde of the undead. So it’s a pretty good guess Lydia isn’t going to be welcome there, even though Judith will want to help her. The Kingdom is going to be busy dealing with the fair and the Highwaymen, and getting Lydia to the Kingdom without having to face off again with Beta and the Whisperers is unlikely.
So what can they do with Lydia? Henry suggested that he and Lydia run off together, but they wouldn’t last long out there alone, and Carol would destroy everything in the area to find Henry if that happened. Our panel tackles the problem of what to do with the Whisperer refugee that now they have to find a safe place for her:
Lydia’s Problematic Placement
Rescuing Lydia has now put Hilltop and Alexandria at risk. What do you think the survivors should do with her?
Sonya says:
"One of the big problems with figuring out what to do with her is that the Whisperers could be anywhere. Any walker could be a Whisperer that will tell Alpha where Lydia was seen or where they are headed. Since there is really no safe place to put her and she and Henry aren’t responsible enough to go off on their own I think they should either return to Hilltop since Hilltop is already in trouble for breaking the deal with Alpha or get Henry and Lydia to the Kingdom because Carol is the best person to protect Henry."
Sara says:
"I don’t want Lydia to go back to the Whisperers because that’s just a toxic place of abuse for her. Keeping Lydia with the survivors will just put them more at risk. I think Lydia needs to go into hiding somewhere safe until the group can take down the Whisperers for good. Only then can Lydia safely remain in their communities."
Jeffrey says:
"I think they should ask Lydia what she wants. She clearly understands now that her mother and people aren’t looking out for her best interests. It wouldn’t be wise to keep Lydia at any of the nearby communities, so sending her to a place like Oceanside or the Junkyard might be the best move. There’s also the option of finding a new home for her that’s even further away."
Sarabeth says:
"I don’t think Alexandria is at risk…yet. That assumes the Whisperers know about it already, which we don’t know. I think that Daryl made a mistake by not making his plans clear to everyone else because now the bigger problem is having Carol going out to find her son and that means putting people at risk."
