The Walking Dead season 9 episode 14 recap: Scars

In the present, Michonne cuts down a herd of walkers when she sees Judith there killing walkers with her. She smiles, but then a walker grabs Judith’s leg and she screams. Michonne kills the walker and grabs her daughter.

Later, mother and daughter sit on a pile of rocks and Michonne tells her the story of that day at the school. She thought she arrived too late, and that Judith had been brainwashed by Jocelyn and that she’d lost her. Judith confesses that she didn’t recognize her mother because of the blood, and Michonne is amazed that Judith remembers it all. She does. Jocelyn made it seem like it was a game, but Judith knew better.

That’s why she knows that Michonne had to do what she did. Michonne is stunned, but Judith says she didn’t talk about it because it made her mother sad. Michonne can’t understand why they’re there, and she says it’s because their friends need help. She knows Michonne chose to be her mother, because she loves her. Judith wants to know when they stopped loving Carol and Maggie and the King.

In the past, the children of Alexandria are reunited with their parents. Siddiq helps Michonne and Daryl.

In the present Michonne and Judith visit Carl’s grave. She tells her the story of how they dug the hole together. She vowed to never lose another child, and that’s why losing Judith that day scared her so much. Judith has tears in her eyes as she listens. Michonne admits that after that day the community vowed to protect the people who lived there, so that she and RJ would be safe. But Michonne admits Judith is right, and they have to protect ALL of the people they love. And they will. They hold hands.

There’s a C on the ground to mark the spot where Carl’s grave is.

Later, Michonne and Judith ride along in the wagon. Judith wonders if her scratch will leave a scar. They stop, and Daryl’s group comes out of the woods. “Anyone heading to Kingdom?” she asks. They smile at each other and get in.

Little do they know there are two Whisperers nearby. They’re at the gates of the Kingdom and they see the wagon go inside with Lydia. “We must tell Alpha,” one says.

The Walking Dead airs Sundays at 9pm on AMC.
