Michonne told Lydia to leave in order to protect the people who helped her but is it too late now to stop conflict with Alpha in future episodes of The Walking Dead?

In the last episode of The Walking Dead, “Scars”, Michonne had a wonderfully coded little sit down with Lydia where Michonne basically told Lydia in not so many words to leave in order to protect the communities that had sheltered her as well as Daryl, Henry, and Connie.

But would Alpha retreat and stick to the original deal if Lydia went back to her now? It seems like it’s really too late to avoid any more bloodshed. That bridge was crossed when Henry snuck after them and was captured by Beta. Alpha might have been persuaded to overlook that but after Daryl and Connie’s daring rescue that ended in Whisperers being killed, there was no going back. Now that the Whisperers have lost people because of the Hilltop contingent Alpha will have revenge against Hilltop.

If Lydia went back to Alpha voluntarily it might calm her wrath a bit but she would still have to make an example of the Hilltop to keep her leadership of the Whisperers. The Whisperers would demand that Alpha get revenge for the dead Whisperers and Alpha would have to punish Hilltop for breaking their deal or else she would be seen as weak. And a weak leader isn’t going to be a leader for very long, especially in the brutal Whisperer cult.

Our panel seems to all agree that on The Walking Dead even if Lydia left the others and went back to Alpha the Whisperer War is coming and can’t be stopped now:

There Will Be Conflict

Michonne warned Lydia to leave to avoid putting everyone in danger. Is it too late that for that now? If Lydia left and went back to the Whisperers on her own do you think there would still be a conflict now that Hilltop broke their deal with Alpha?

Sonya says:

"It would be nice if Lydia returning would make Alpha just go away but there is no way she’s going to dial anything back now. She’s going to be making a point and I’m more than a little scared of what she’s going to do. Everyone should be afraid of what she’s going to do. It’s going to be something huge, no doubt."

Sara says:

"Oh the group is still very much in danger after the brawl with Beta. Alpha doesn’t seem like the one to give up so quickly. She will get the final laugh at whatever cost that might be. Daryl and the group have now crossed her twice, it’s over for them."

Jeffrey says:

"I think it’s too late at this point for Lydia to return to the Whisperers and for all to be forgiven. Henry sneaking into the Whisperer camp only to be rescued with Lydia by Daryl and Connie made Alpha look weak. If we learned anything from her suppressing the couple that questioned her leadership, it’s that Alpha does not want to be perceived as weak. This is a full-blown conflict right now and I genuinely think Alpha wants blood. The days of peaceful negotiation are long gone, and we are on the brink of war."

Sarabeth says:

"I think that depends on whether the Whisperers can be considered trustworthy. If they return her, will they actually go away? Is Alpha so bent on revenge and showing her power that she won’t let it go? It’s hard to say. I don’t think it matters anymore. She’s going to make a move no matter what."
