Alycia Debnam-Carey counters Fear the Walking Dead darkness with style
Alycia Debnam-Carey has been fighting the undead for years, and in our interview she says that she fights Fear the Walking Dead’s dark themes with her personal style.
When you spend your days and nights fighting the undead at work, it helps to balance things out by embracing the lighter side of life. For Fear the Walking Dead star Alycia Debnam-Carey, the best way to counteract the darkness in Alicia Clark’s life is to make sure that Alycia Debnam-Carey is the exact opposite of her character. We had a chance to talk with Debnam-Carey at WonderCon 2019 and she explained how the bows in her hair helped to exemplify her philosophy.
As the longest-standing member of the Fear the Walking Dead cast, Debnam-Carey has seen more than he fair share of cast members come and go. Onscreen, Alicia Clark’s suffering might be unrivaled; Alicia lost her mother, brother, Travis, Chris (for better or worse), and she was building a relationship with Jake when he died back in season 3. Alicia has been soldiering through it all, becoming all the stronger for it.
Given her character’s suffering over the past few seasons, Debnam-Carey says that she has a way to combat the darkness on the show and it involves her fashion choices. When asked about how much of herself she sees in Alicia Clark, she had this to say:
"I’m much girlier in real life, you can see that for sure. The bows [in her hair] give it away. It’s very hard, you know. I’ve been on the show for five years and I’ve grown up as a young woman on the show and that’s a very formulative period. You’re discovering who you are and what you like and what you want. And at times because I’ve worked so much throughout it there are moments when they intersect. With myself and my character, I feel like a lot of those elements that you portray, those elements, they’re in you and they exist in you and it’s just how much you choose to bring them out. And I think what I have found recently, maybe because the subject matter in this world has gotten much darker than it used to be, elements of the character that come out are a lot darker and a lot more morbid. That’s something where I’ve been found in my personal life that I’ve done the complete opposite. I’ve tried to overcompensate and really wear color or wear bows in my hair. Because it is part of you. You’re drawing it from your own well so it’s hard to distinguish which parts are really you and what you’re exaggerating."
Debnam-Carey was the pinnacle of style at WonderCon in Anaheim on March 31, dressed in a denim dress with black bows in her hair. She posted the look on her Instagram account:

The Fear the Walking Dead cast knows a thing or two about style. Colman Domingo is one of the most well-dressed people on the planet. (He was rocking pink Stella McCartney sunglasses and a yellow suit at WonderCon) Debnam-Carey’s other leading ladies Danay Garcia, Maggie Grace and Jenna Elfman are incredibly elegant no matter where they go, even if it’s just a baseball game:
Keep an eye on Debnam-Carey’s Instagram in the coming weeks and months. If the season 5 trailer of Fear the Walking Dead is any indication there are dark days coming for the survivors.
Fear the Walking Dead returns June 2 on AMC.
