Daniel Salazar is coming back to the Fear the Walking Dead universe after a season-long break, and in the season 5 trailer he looks really good.

Daniel Salazar is like a cat with nine lives. He was once stuck in a smoldering room full of the dead, and he was also shot in the face minutes before the dam he was standing on blew up. Fans got a look at Ruben Blades as Salazar in the Fear the Walking Dead season 5 trailer, and though it was but a brief glimpse the man looks really good considering all the times he almost died.

Thanks to the time jump between seasons 3 and 4, Daniel Salazar had time to not only recuperate from being shot and blown up, but to also travel halfway across the country to catch up with Victor Strand and the other survivors. (At this point the only people Salazar would know are Strand, Luciana and Alicia, unless he happened to meet Althea at some point) It’s thanks to the time jump that Salazar is completely healed, and based on the trailer it looks like he’s living pretty well.

The big question, of course, is how Salazar managed to survive the ordeal on the dam. Being caught on the dam when it exploded while also dealing with being shot couldn’t have been easy, and yet somehow Salazar managed to survive. Where did he recover? Did he have help? Is he still with the people who helped him, or did he meet new people on his journey? Why did he decide to travel East in the first place?

Salazar’s return in season 5 marks the second time he has miraculously returned to the show. The first time was when he returned to the show in season 3 after being stuck in a burning room with a group of the dead at Celia’s ranch. His return was a huge surprise back then, so imagine the reactions when he appears for a second time!

There’s a sparkle in Blades’ eyes as he tells his old rival that he still talks too much in the trailer. It’s worth noting because it can almost be interpreted as Salazar’s amusement at the situation. No one knows he’s alive, and now he shows up with a gun aimed at Strand’s back and Strand is trying to sweet-talk his way out of trouble. Salazar knows that as soon as he reveals his identity it’s going to change everything, and so perhaps he’s enjoying the humor of the moment.
