Meeting up with old friends during the apocalypse seems pretty unlikely, but Dwight’s arrival on Fear the Walking Dead makes a lot of sense.

One of the hallmarks of Fear the Walking Dead is that the survivors have yet to settle down. From the start of the outbreak the Clark family has been moving around, and the longest time they spent in one place was at the ballpark, which fans saw in a series of flashbacks. When Dwight shows up in season 5 it might seem outlandish (which, admittedly, it is) but it also makes sense for a variety of reasons.

Fans haven’t seen Dwight since Daryl sent him packing at the end of season 8. That was around the same time that Morgan also left Alexandria. At the time, the weather was nice and by that point many of the roads in the area had been fairly well mapped out. If he was on foot he would be able to walk around cars or debris, and if he was driving he’d likely know which roads to avoid.

It’s the roads that are key to Dwight and Morgan meeting up again. Anyone taking a journey in the apocalypse is going to travel on existing roads. With the threat of the walkers always present, it doesn’t make sense to travel through woods or across fields when there are roadways available. Sticking to the roads keeps you from getting lost or turned around, and it’s always possible to duck into the bushes or trees on the side of the road to avoid being seen in the event of an emergency.

In Dwight’s case, there were three choices to make: Travel due West, travel due South, or split the difference and travel in a Southwest direction. With winter weather being problematic, Dwight probably wouldn’t choose to go North. There’s definitely a reason he ended up near Texas (we still don’t know exactly where we are going into season 5) and it probably had a lot to do with his search for Sherry.

The fact that Dwight and Morgan are able to reunite probably has a lot to do with them both ending up on the same road at some point. It could be intentional, or it could be a massive coincidence. Either way, though, it’s what brings them together in season 5 and we’ll hopefully learn more about how Dwight ended up so far from Alexandria.

Fear the Walking Dead returns on June 2 at 9pm on AMC.
