Lauren Cohan’s new show Whiskey Cavalier had a solid debut but has been slipping in the ratings, sliding to a new series low after the April 24 episode.

Upfront season is upon us and ABC network executives will be making decisions about which shows will be renewed as well as which ones will get the boot to make way for new series in the fall. Though Lauren Cohan’s Whiskey Cavalier had a lot of attention during its premiere, the show has been suffering in the ratings and there’s a good chance it will be on the chopping block.

According to TV Line, Whiskey Cavalier’s ratings slipped to a series low 0.4 with 2.5 million viewers after the April 24 episode. The show premiered with a 0.7, peaked with a 0.9, and has declined ever since. Talk of cancellation goes back to early April as analysts prepare for networks to start making their decisions ahead of upfronts.

ABC’s upfront presentation will take place on May 14, and it’s there that the alphabet network will reveal its slate of new shows and revamped schedule for the 2019-2020 television season. Though Whiskey Cavalier was one of ABC’s gems at the 2018 upfronts, with an enormous presence at San Diego Comic-Con (the trolleys and part of Petco Park were wrapped with posters featuring stars Cohan and Scott Foley), the show hasn’t performed as well as expected. The ratings decline, coupled with the expense of producing a show that features exotic European locations each week, put the show at risk of cancellation.

The door remains open for Lauren Cohan to return to The Walking Dead, and it would have been open even if Whiskey Cavalier’s numbers were high enough to earn a renewal. The question now is whether or not Cohan will dedicate more time to The Walking Dead if she isn’t working on Whiskey Cavalier. A large variable in that equation is Cohan’s salary and whether AMC is willing to pay to keep her around longer than just a few episodes in season 10. (My guess: Yes. Yes they will)

At the moment things aren’t looking good for Whiskey Cavalier. Keep checking back as we’ll continue to monitor the developments in this story.
