Chad L. Coleman was fantastic as Tyreese on AMC’s The Walking Dead and he believes showrunner Angela Kang is excelling at bringing nuance back to the show.

Spending three seasons on The Walking Dead, Chad L. Coleman played a complicated character named Tyreese who struggled with the brutality and deadly nature of the zombie apocalypse on the hit AMC show.

Like a lot of fans, Chad L. Coleman enjoyed watching the zombie survival drama series but was a bit shocked and put off by the gruesome nature of two deaths at the hands of Negan in the season 7 premiere.

After witnessing those murders, Coleman was struggling to enjoy the show the way he did in the past, but since then he has found a great reason to get back into the program. He discussed his situation during an interview shared on the YouTube channel of Popcorn Talk:

Coleman’s words about season 7 ring true for a lot of viewers. Watching two fan-favorite characters get beaten down and their heads smashed in with a barbed-wire baseball bat definitely disturbed many folks.

When season 9 rolled around, Coleman found the show returning to a more subtle approach to storytelling and put some praise on the new showrunner for her efforts in bringing the show back to the one he remembered.

"“After Glenn and Abraham, you know, Negan smashed their heads in that way, it was just like, ‘That’s enough for me. Thanks, guys. Take care. All the best,'” he told Popcorn Talk. “But they’re coming back around to more nuanced, less extreme characters, you know.”"

Complicated characters do make for a great viewing experience. Being able to see multiple sides of a hero or villain makes any situation or storyline more interesting and creates depth for future potential storylines.

Coleman likened the season 9 to the characterization of the previous seasons, even giving praise to the new showrunner for her efforts in making the show more accessible and subtle while still telling a great story.

"“That’s one of the benefits and joys of playing Tyreese – he’s a very real man in a very tough situation and you felt his humanity. His sensitivity, all the things that all of us as just regular folk would go through, so they’re getting back to more nuanced character stuff again with [showrunner] Angela Kang.”"
