The Walking Dead alum Lew Temple has an upcoming new project that will have him saddling up for what’s being described as a Western horror flick.

Temple, who played the role of fan-favorite prisoner Axel on season three of AMC’s The Walking Dead, has been announced by Deadline as landing one of the leads in a new film titled Spirit Reckoning. He will be sharing the lead billing on the movie with The Boondock Saints actor Sean Patrick Flanery.

The two actors will play gunslinging rivals in the Wild West. Flanery’s character is name Lawson Lovette, and he’s on a mission of revenge. Lovette’s crazy ways end up sparking a heated and vicious rivalry with Temple’s character who is named Ottis Clement.

The film is directed by Jimmy Lee Combs who, in a statement to Deadline, expressed his excitement over working with Temple, a true veteran actor. He said:

"“We’re also thrilled to be working with a veteran like Lew who not only has the look we’re going for but the range to play a character that can go to psychotic lengths. I mean just watch his performance as Psycho-Head in Rob Zombie’s 31.”"

Axel, Temple’s character on The Walking Dead, began as a somewhat controversial addition to the survivors’ prison camp during season three. Thanks to his formed relationship with fan-favorite Carol Pelletier, viewers began to trust Axel and even began to like him. In fact, Temple’s Axel had just delivered a witty and hilarious one-liner mere seconds before season three villain The Governor fatally shot him sparking a massive battle between the two groups at the prison.

In addition to The Walking Dead, Temple is also known for his role in the 2005 Rob Zombie film The Devil’s Rejects and will be seen next on the big screen in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
