When Fear the Walking Dead returns for season 5 the group’s focus will be on helping the helpless, but they’re facing a massive uphill battle.

At the end of Fear the Walking Dead season 4 Morgan’s group had made a decision to focus their energy on helping the people out there who need help. The season 5 trailer makes mention of their intention to help people and also reveals that not everyone wants their help. One of the biggest problems facing the team is that they will be coming face to face with desperation.

Despite the time jump between Fear the Walking Dead season 3 and 4, the show is several years behind The Walking Dead. Even so, several years have passed since the start of the apocalypse and that means that the people who are still around have been able to make it this far, somehow.

When Morgan’s group goes looking for people who need help, if they use Al’s tapes to find people they might find that those people could have been in one situation when Al came through before but they’re in a very different situation now. If they were in dire straits back then, it’s more than likely that things have only gotten worse.

It’s a challenge, then, to try to help people who have nothing left. Desperation has taken over and they’re going to do whatever it takes to survive. So when a big truck full of supplies rolls up, it’s open season.

Morgan’s heart is in the right place. You can hear it in the trailer when he says that they’re coming to help. He genuinely wants to help people, but hopefully those efforts don’t put the entire group in jeopardy. (They probably will, of course) Along the way they will find people who are grateful for the help, and that’s fantastic. But it’s going to be more difficult to help people than Morgan probably thought.

Fear the Walking Dead returns Sunday, June 2 at 9pm on AMC.
