The kids are not alright as ABC cancels Michael Cudlitz comedy
The Michael Cuditz family comedy got the knock from ABC after only one season that saw the show perform well in the ratings, but clearly not well enough.
Television upfront season can be as brutal as sitting in Negan’s lineup. Shows are being hacked across the television landscape to make room for new shows for the 2019-2020 television season and that means saying goodbye to some great shows. ABC’s family comedy The Kids Are Alright, starring The Walking Dead alum Michael Cudlitz, was cut on Friday afternoon despite strong ratings and a loyal following.
The Kids are Alright was the story of an Irish-Catholic family set in the 1970s. Mike Cleary (Cudlitz) and his wife Peggy are trying to make the most of the tumultuous times with their eight sons. Hilarity ensues.
The show debuted on October 16, 2018 with a healthy 1.42 in the key 18-29 ratings demographic. Over the course of the season the show’s ratings ebbed and flowed but never dipped below .60, so news of the cancellation is a surprise. (By contrast, Lauren Cohan’s Whiskey Cavalier just hit a new low with .40 for the May 7 episode)
The Walking Dead family has been overjoyed by the “reunions” on The Kids are Alright. Ross Marquand and Josh McDermitt both had guest roles on the show, and Cudlitz expressed a desire to keep the cameos coming.
Cudlitz will return to The Walking Dead to direct episode 10×03 in mid-May, but news of his show’s cancellation has got to sting because it was so much fun. With any luck, AMC will find a way to bring Abraham Ford back, be it through a crossover with Fear the Walking Dead or in one of the many other projects in the works. Thankfully, the malleable nature of the new Walking Dead universe allow for trips back in time and so a return is entirely possible for Abe.
