It has been a bumpy ride for the Lauren Cohan rom-com action drama Whiskey Cavalier and the show’s future hangs in the balance ahead of ABC upfronts.

Whiskey Cavalier has been struggling in live viewings but they tend to pick up with Live +7 views. With ABC cutting shows left and right, does the Lauren Cohan spy show have a chance of seeing season 2? The future is quite uncertain.

Lauren Cohan appeared in a handful of episodes in The Walking Dead season 9 in order to spend time on her new show Whiskey Cavalier. The rom-com inspired action drama gave Cohan a chance to do something different, and as one of the show’s leads (along with costar Scott Foley) it also gave her a chance to really shine.

Whiskey Cavalier, though highly touted by ABC ahead of its premiere, never really took off. The show debuted with a .80 in the key 18-49 demographic, peaked in week 2 with .85, and then declined ever since. However, the show has strong gains in delayed views and that could be what ultimately saves the show.

While the Michael Cudlitz comedy The Kids are Alright got the boot on May 10, Nathan Fillion’s The Rookie (which stars Fear the Walking Dead’s Mercedes Mason) was renewed and now fans are waiting to hear whether Lauren Cohan’s show will be renewed or cancelled. ABC’s upfront presentation is on May 14 and the decision could come at any time.

Cohan has an open invitation to return to The Walking Dead season 10. There is a story already planned out and all she needs to do is say yes. The big question is whether she will return on a more permanent basis should Whiskey Cavalier be cancelled. (In hindsight, keeping the door open to return to The Walking Dead was a good idea given the fickle nature of network TV)

There are a lot of uncertainties heading into ABC’s upfront presentation and it will be interesting to see whether ABC throws the dice with Whiskey Cavalier or puts the spies on ice with a cancellation. Stay tuned for updates.
