Fear TWD, Survival Rule Of The Week: No good deed goes unpunished
By Liam O'Leary
Morgan is making a new safe zone in Fear The Walking Dead, but, if past experience is any indication, in a zombie apocalypse, no good deed goes unpunished.
Okay, I haven’t seen any of the trailers or promos for Season Five of Fear The Walking Dead, and I don’t plan to (Unless I later discover they have good music in them, or something), so, I don’t know much about what’s been hinted at in them.
What I do know is that, when we last left Morgan and company, they were in the process of creating some kind of safe zone for people in the Texas/Arkansas/Louisiana/Mississippi region; Searching for, helping, and maybe even collecting, survivors in the area.
Of course, Morgan should already know from experience that trying to be good in a zombie apocalypse can be an extremely dangerous, and, quite frankly, thankless course to take.
His dealings with The Saviors should have taught him that, to have the sort of space and resources needed to sustain the sort of safe zone (Maybe even community?) he seeks to build will inevitably draw the attention of those who don’t want to share, but to take.
Furthermore, his experience with his nemesis, Jared, should have taught him that there are people who see the apocalypse as an excuse to do whatever violent and vile thing they want because, so long as they have the might to back them up, they can get away with it.
Let’s also not forget what he ran into last season: Martha. For every grateful survivor he and his group saves, he could just as easily meet another person like Martha, someone so warped by what’s happened to them or what they’ve seen since the outbreak started that they’ve become crazed, twisted, and violent.
I mean, look at what happened to Polar Bear, the man who inspired Morgan in the first place: He organized a bunch of truckers to help him spread supplies around to weary survivors in the area and, when Martha found them, she started picking them off and trying to poison people with the water they were providing! What if Morgan runs into someone else like that?
Am I saying that Morgan should just cloister himself and the rest of the group up in the dungarees factory forever? No. Mostly because, even if he did, it’s no guarantee that he or the group would be safe from any hostiles, be they greedy, evil, or crazy. Even without that, what Morgan seeks to do is the sort of thing that can help bring people together, which is, honestly, not only a good thing to do during something like a zombie apocalypse, but, considering how much stronger people are together, it’s a smart thing to do.
That said, he and the rest of the group better be very careful in how they go about trying to find and perhaps collect the people they’re trying to help. Because, especially in the cruel and brutal world of a zombie apocalypse, no good deed goes unpunished, and, if you’re not ready, that punishment may prove fatal.
This is why you follow…The Rules.
