Kim Dickens is back at the brothel in the Deadwood movie
By Renee Hansen
On May 31st the HBO series Deadwood gets revised as a full length film and Kim Dickens is back running her brothel.
Deadwood, the award winning HBO series, ran for 3 seasons and ended in 2006. There had been rumors of its reprisal and then we finally hear that they are doing a feature length film that will be the ending of HBO’s depiction of the town of Deadwood. The film will pick up a decade after the end of season 3.
An article by AV TV Club, Deadwood Lives Again, has a quick catch up guide so you don’t have to watch or re-watch all three seasons to appreciate the film. This article contains major spoilers for the series but not for the film.

According to HBO, returning cast members for the Deadwood movie include: Ian McShane (Al Swearengen), Timothy Olyphant (Seth Bullock), Molly Parker (Alma Ellsworth), Paula Malcomson (Trixie), John Hawkes (Sol Star), Anna Gunn (Martha Bullock), Dayton Callie (Charlie Utter), Brad Dourif (Doc Cochran), Robin Weigert (“Calamity” Jane Canary), William Sanderson (E.B. Farnum), Kim Dickens (Joanie Stubbs) and Gerald McRaney (George Hearst). The film will also feature new cast member Jade Pettyjohn (Caroline).
Kim Dickens, who portrays brothel madame Joanie Stubbs, shared this beautiful photo below on her Instagram page. She is dressed very elegantly in late 1800’s fashion. She manages the girls who work at the Bella Union, the local saloon. In the series she plays a smart woman and confidant of the Bella Union’s owner, Cy Tolliver (who was portrayed by Powers Boothe who sadly died in 2017). Joanie befriends Calamity Jane (portrayed by Robin Weigert) an acquaintance of Wild Bill Hickok. Dickens character is loosely based on Dora DuFran, Deadwood’s most successful old west madam.

Some years after the Deadwood series ended Kim went on to play Colette Jane on the Sons of Anarchy who owned an escort service. Not a far stretch from her Deadwood madame character.
Some of us also recognize her as the matriarch, Madison from Fear The Walking Dead series. (I personally feel she made her exit way too soon. She was a valuable asset to the Fear team)
Don’t forget to check out Deadwood on HBO Friday, May 31st.
