He’s world weary and looking a little worse for wear, but Dwight has successfully crossed over to Fear the Walking Dead and his journey was surprisingly simple.

There’s the road not taken, and then there’s the road that everyone in the apocalypse seems to take to get to Texas. Such is the case for The Walking Dead’s Dwight, who has been MIA on AMC’s flagship show since the end of season 8. In “Humbug’s Gulch” Dwight makes his grand debut on Fear the Walking Dead. His journey was actually very similar to Morgan’s and that makes a whole lot of sense.

While Fear the Walking Dead remains several years behind The Walking Dead, one thing remains true between the two shows: By now you know how to get around. Thanks to truckers Sarah and Wendell the group knows the local roads pretty well. They have been all over the place and they know which roads were washed out, which ones have fallen trees and they know which ones are clear.

Similarly, anyone traveling from Alexandria would know the local roads because by that point The Walking Dead crew has been moving around the local area. For a guy like Dwight, who was once one of Negan’s trusted lieutenants, knowing how to move around the different Savior holdings would be important.

That Morgan and Dwight ended up together in the same spot is certainly a coincidence, one that requires just a tad bit of artistic license. But it also makes sense. They both chose one road, Interstate 85, and they both ended up in Texas. Perhaps Sherry took the same route. There could be any number of reasons that this was the road taken, with the most probable that it was one of the only ones that was clear for car and foot travel.

Now that Dwight has joined up with John, June, Morgan and the rest of the group, he will no doubt be a big asset to the team given the ground he has covered and the things he has seen. He might be something of a loner but having a friendly face so far from “home” is never a bad thing.

Fear the Walking Dead airs Sundays at 9pm on AMC.
