Colman Domingo continues to blaze a bold trail for actors stepping behind the camera as he brings Fear the Walking Dead 503 to life.

“Humbug’s Gulch” is a very special episode of Fear the Walking Dead and that’s because of its director. Once again Colman Domingo, the Renaissance Man of the apocalypse, is stepping behind the camera in his second outing as a show director. It’s a particularly special episode for Domingo to direct because it features the debut of Fear the Walking Dead’s newest character: Dwight.

Domingo’s directorial debut came in season 4 with episode 412’s “Weak.” It marked the first time that any actor from The Walking Dead universe directed an episode of the show. To date he’s still the first actor currently starring in the series to direct an episode. The Walking Dead alum Michael Cudlitz just finished directing his second episode, and Sarah Wayne Callies is about to join the director’s club after directing a season 5 episode of Fear the Walking Dead.

“Weak” featured Morgan’s search for his friends after the storm left everyone stranded in different locations, and it also featured June working to save Al’s life after her health took a turn for the worse. It was a brilliant directorial debut and it was certainly enough to whet Domingo’s appetite because got right back behind the camera and his second episode is already airing.

This time around things are a lot more complex for Domingo as the group of survivors finds themselves fighting back against strange new threats. As a director, there are lots of filming locations to juggle along with some incredible walker scenes and a few epic moments that we won’t spoil for you.

“Humbug’s Gulch” is a lot of fun and it’s easy to imagine Domingo bringing these scenes to life. As an actor-turned-director, Domingo has a keen eye for giving the actors room to shine on their own, and shine they do. Fans of apocalypse power couple June and John will particularly enjoy this episode, and obviously Dwight’s arrival is a huge deal, but there are so many other chances for the rest of the cast to shine in this episode.
