Usually it’s the shark doing the nipping and tucking, but this time The Walking Dead FX guru Greg Nicotero is giving Bruce the Shark a much-needed makeover.

Bruce the Shark is a Hollywood legend and after 44 years, even Hollywood legends need a little work. That’s why the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures turned to The Walking Dead FX guru Greg Nicotero to give the famous shark from Jaws a little makeover.

The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures will soon be the world’s premier destination for movie memorabilia. It’s no wonder, then, that the future museum is home to Bruce the Shark, who is also known as “the shark from Jaws.” Bruce is the last replica shark from the 1975 film, but years of neglect have taken their toll on the prop that played a major role in terrifying moviegoers – and beachgoers – for over four decades.

To achieve the transformation the Museum brought in an FX specialist in Greg Nicotero who, along with his team, gave the shark a complete makeover. Nicotero can bring anything to life, including the undead, so it’s no wonder that he was the man for the job.

Indeed, Bruce is still missing his teeth and eyes but even without them he hasn’t looked this good in years.

The timing of the restoration news is perfect, as the advent of summer brings throngs of beachgoers to coastal waters every day. Jaws is famously set over the course of the long Fourth of July holiday weekend in a sunny New England town. It’s impossible to go into the water during the summer without thinking of the giant Great White with his soulless black eyes.

Bruce was one of four prop sharks used for filming and according to THR this was the final version made. The studio dumped the fiberglass shark with some other ancient props and the junkyard owner saved him from certain doom, putting him on display. The junkyard owner’s son, Nathan Adlen, donated the shark to the Museum in 2016.

Fans won’t be able to see Bruce in all his glory until the Museum opens at some point in 2020.
