TWD at SDCC 2019: Saying thank you and goodbye to Danai Gurira

San Diego Comic-Con is fast approaching and this could be one of the last times fans have a chance to say thank you to Danai Gurira ahead of The Walking Dead season 10.

As The Walking Dead heads into its tenth season, saying goodbye to longtime cast members is becoming the norm as new faces emerge to lead the franchise into the next phase. In 2018 Andrew Lincoln said his goodbyes to fans at SDCC, and now in 2019 it will be Danai Gurira taking a bow.

Danai Gurira is a woman of many talents and the TWD Family has been blessed to have her as our Queen for so long. She’s working on two of the biggest franchises around: The Walking Dead on television and Marvel on the big screen. She’s active in the theater community, and her philanthropic endeavors are always near and dear to her heart.

As Gurira’s roles in the Marvel universe expand, she has to say goodbye to Michonne for the time being. Many fans speculate that Michonne’s journey will continue (and possibly conclude) in the Rick Grimes movies being developed for AMC.

Over the years Gurira has not been as involved with Walker Stalker Conventions as other cast members have been, so there’s no guarantee that she’ll appear at WSC Atlanta this year. (Andrew Lincoln didn’t appear in 2018) That means San Diego Comic-Con and New York Comic Con (in October) could be the last time that fans see Gurira on stage with The Walking Dead cast.

It’s a bittersweet moment, to be sure, but with the advent of the Rick Grimes movies it would be amazing to have Rick and Michonne reunited and if Gurira’s schedule only allows for one thing to happen, then we celebrate the time she has left in season 10 while looking forward to the movies.

With the season 10 premiere likely coming in October, it’s time to start preparing for another big goodbye. More importantly, though, it’s a great time to say “thank you” to Gurira for all of her years of work on The Walking Dead.

SDCC takes place July 17-21. The Walking Dead dead returns in October.
