Our Fear The Walking Dead panel loves seeing pets in the apocalypse
By Sonya Iryna
Dog and Skidmark prove that pets can be valuable allies in The Walking Dead universe. Would you keep a pet in the apocalypse?
Skidmark is now the Internet’s pet as well as Daniel Salazar’s pet on Fear The Walking Dead. Plenty of Twitter users were ready to riot should anything happen to this fearless orange cat who helps Daniel manage walkers.
On The Walking Dead, Dog fulfills the same duties for Daryl. Dog is always ready to jump into a fight, alert Daryl to walkers, and help out however he can. Pets can be valuable allies as well as great companions in the apocalypse world the same way they can be in this world. It’s true that pets are more mouths to feed in a world where resources are very limited but as Skidmark showed us in FearTWD this week animals can more than earn their keep by helping out the humans.
When you think about the amazing things that dogs and cats can do that would be helpful in The Walking Dead world like the way that Skidmark draws walkers so that Daniel can kill them or how Dog uses his keen canine senses to detect walkers long before human sense can pick them up it makes a lot of sense that people would keep in the apocalypse world. So why haven’t we seen more pets in the apocalypse?
Animals tend to not fare very well in The Walking Dead universe but in a world where humans are becoming harder and harder to find pets can also be valuable companions that can keep people from succumbing to depression or loneliness when they are on their own. Skidmark, and the topic of keeping a pet in The Walking Dead world was a big topic of discussion for our panel this week:
Apocalypse Pets
We have seen Dog in The Walking Dead, and now Skidmark in Fear, what do you think of seeing pets in the apocalypse?
Sonya says:
I love seeing animals in the apocalypse world. Skidmark is adorable and so helpful! But then again I’m an unabashed cat person so, of course, Skidmark is my favorite. I do love Dog as well. I’ve always had pets and I think if I were in that world I’d definitely still have pets. Pets teach us unconditional love, and in that world love is something hard to find.
Sara says:
I love getting to see pets in the apocalypse! It’s so great getting to see how they adapt to their new surroundings, and how they react to walkers. It’s clear that they know that the walkers are dangerous and not the same as a human. I find that really interesting to watch on both shows.
Jeffrey says:
I love seeing characters have pets in the apocalypse. It gives them a much-needed companion, especially characters like Daryl and Daniel, who are loners for the most part. It does make me additionally stressed out when the pets are on screen because I just can’t even begin to fathom seeing them be injured or killed. The stakes are higher than ever with them on screen.
Renee says:
I think people love their pets so this makes the characters more relatable. Pets in this world give people hope. If pets can survive surely humans can as well.
