Daryl Dixon: Special bonds, what’s next
By Renee Hansen
Daryl Dixon has always been a fan favorite on TWD. It will be interesting to see where Season 10 takes him.
Since the first scene in The Walking Dead season 1 when Daryl walks out of the woods, the one where he had been successfully hunting squirrels and not so successfully tracking a deer, I have loved this character. His first line in the series ” Son of a Bitch, that’s my deer. Look at it, all gnawed on by this filthy, disease bearing, motherless, proxie bastard” He was completely oblivious to the guns and weapons pointed at him. He wasn’t the most lovable guy at that point but there was just something about him that stood out.
We had met his not so pleasant brother Merle and everyone was waiting to see how Daryl would react to his brother being left handcuffed on the building in Atlanta. Of course he didn’t take it well, and it was then that Rick learned quickly that Daryl was a hot head.
As the series goes on Daryl transforms into a very different person. He still keeps his redneck roots but has finally opened up and starting caring about the people he is fighting with in this world.
Rick and Daryl have been through so many tough times together. Losing people they love, close calls with death and just trying to survive this world. They even had their share of disagreements. But, we could see in Season 9 that no matter what happened between them Daryl has yet to give up the hope of finding Rick.
Carol and Daryl’s bond started the day Daryl handed her the pick ax so she could bash in Ed’s head after he had been attacked by walkers. I think Daryl saw there was more to Carol than she even knew. They have always been close and care about each other very much. People always want them to hook up but I for one love the relationship just how it is.
Judith and Daryl will always have a special bond as well. Who didn’t gush when we saw Daryl holding Judith for the first time and dubbed her “Little Asskicker”. With the loss of her brother and father, Daryl has tried to step in and be there for Judith.
There others that Daryl has had a special bond with as well. But, these are the three I feel have really made him who he is.
So, what is next for Daryl?
People always want to see a relationship with Daryl and someone. I just don’t know that Daryl needs a love interest. He has always been a loner type and loving and being loved is a hard concept for him. He has come a long way from season 1 when Merle and him were planning on robbing the camp. He would now defend them all with his last breath.
Some people say that Daryl can be the next leader of the group. I don’t see that happening. He is the guy who likes to take orders and do what needs to be done rather than lead the group. He is a valuable asset to the group but I just don’t see him being a leader.
What I would really like to see is more Daryl vs. Beta. I think the Whisperers have added a great element to TWD series and I don’t want them to go too soon but, I do want more Daryl and Beta.
I am really looking forward to Season 10 of TWD . Lots of changes ahead and it will be very interesting to see where Season 10 takes us.
