The Whisperers creepy walker mask disguises and ability to sneak into the communities cause paranoia among the survivors in The Walking Dead season 10.

When The Walking Dead season 9 ended the survivors were taking a breath and trying to process the huge losses that they suffered from the Whisperers while also trying to survive the brutal winter weather. But according to showrunner Angela Kang the Whisperers will keep the survivors on edge and paranoid. In a recent interview with EW she said that one of the themes in season 10 will be how different the Whisperer threat is from any other threat they’ve faced.

The ability of the Whisperers to hide among the dead so that it’s impossible to tell until the very last second if a walker is actually dead or is a deadly Whisperer is going to make the stakes a lot higher in this conflict. And the fact that Alpha was able to slip into the Kingdom and disguise herself so easily to blend in with the other survivors is really going to make the survivors distrustful of everyone.

The survivors thought that they had a pretty good handle on how to survive in that world, especially after the beat Negan and the Saviors who had been the greatest threat they ever faced. But they’re going to struggle with how to deal with the Whisperers who have already hit them hard and killed many of their people.

When talking about how the show will address the survivors’ reactions to this strange new but deadly threat Angela Kang told EW:

"“One of the great things from the comic book that we got really excited about, there’s this idea of propaganda and paranoia, and this idea of “silence the Whisperers,” which Robert Kirkman played really well. So there’s definitely a feeling as our group gets into this conflict that keeps building between the Whisperers that’s very different from how the Saviors war played out, where there’s just elements of paranoia but kind of a Cold War feel. There’s a lot of brinkmanship and things like that, because the Whisperers are so different. Alpha pulled her big move on our people by being in disguise and sneaking around in the middle of a fair. It’s just open for all to see, and somehow nabbing these people. That’s a very different way of operating than any of the other people that they’ve had to deal with, really. So we’ve been having a lot of fun playing with that feel for the season.”"

The Whisperer Herd

Another way in which the Whisperer threat is going to be unlike any threat they’ve faced before is the sheer number of the Whisperers. When Alpha showed Daryl that massive herd and told him that her people were living in amongst the herd and could direct the herd in any she instructed that was a chilling reminder that the survivors aren’t prepared for this fight.

A walker herd that has thousands of walkers and possibly thousands of deadly Whisperers descending on the communities could cause all of the communities to fall very quickly despite their defenses.

The Walking Dead season 10 is going to be radically different from previous seasons in some ways, but this new and horrifying threat will also make the bond that the survivors have with each other even more important to their survival.
