The Walking Dead season 10 will tell more Whisperer backstory
By Sonya Iryna
There’s still a lot to discover about Alpha, Beta, and how the Whisperers came to be and The Walking Dead season 10 will reveal more about them.
In season 9 of The Walking Dead a little bit about Alpha’s origin story was revealed through the lens of her daughter Lydia’s experience. At the start of the apocalypse fans saw that Alpha was an abusive mother who took charge of the chaotic situation where the family was staying and ended up killing people. It was also revealed that she beats Lydia.
But nothing was revealed about how she became Alpha, or how she amassed such a huge group of followers. Beta’s backstory also wasn’t touched. But according to showrunner Angela Kang more of pieces of the Whisperer puzzle will be explored in season 10 of The Walking Dead. In a recent interview with EW she said:
"“We’ll be telling more of their side of the story in season 10. We will get some interesting backstory, and some more insight into some more characters within that group. We will learn more about Alpha and Beta. They’ve got their own problems, too, within their group, so there will be some interesting back-and-forth between our two groups as they deal with this conflict at the border.”"
That’s a pretty good indication that the conflict with the Whisperers is far from over. It will be really interesting to see what the catalyst was for the creation of this cultish view of the walkers and why the Whisperers revere them and consider them to be just a step on the evolutionary ladder.
It will also be interesting to see how Beta became so devoted to Alpha. Someone with his stature and killing power could easily seize control from himself but he is absolutely devoted to Alpha.
Understanding The Whisperers
Usually seeing the backstory of a group makes that group seem more sympathetic and less threatening. But that isn’t likely to happen with the Whisperers. The reveal of their backstory is only going to highlight the strange nature of their chosen survival method.
Throughout the saga of The Walking Dead fans have been emotionally invested in Rick Grimes and the other survivors because they see themselves in those survivors, or at least they see idealized versions of themselves in those survivors.
But very few people will see anything they can relate to in the Whisperers. The back stories of Alpha and Beta might give fans a better understanding of their behavior, but it won’t make them more sympathetic characters. After killing so many of the beloved survivors like Jesus, Tara, and Enid there’s little the Whisperers could do to earn redemption.
The survivors are going to have to find new ways to fight this threat in The Walking Dead season 10 and that should make for a very exciting season. Follow @SonyaIryna and @UndeadWalkingFS on Twitter for more coverage of The Walking Dead season 10.
