You only have one life and can lose it quickly in a zombie apocalypse, so, as we learned from this week’s episode of Fear the Walking Dead, make it count.

You only get one shot at this life, so, don’t waste it. That’s a philosophy many a person have, and…it’s not a bad one, honestly. I mean, it’s true, isn’t it? We should enjoy life and try to waste as little of as possible. This is especially true in a zombie apocalypse.

That said, no, we shouldn’t be doing a “LOL! YOLO!” and acting like a reckless moron, either: Like I just said, we only get one shot, and being reckless is a great way to waste it. Imagine if you decided to get a herd of zombies to chase you for giggles, only…to be unable to shake them. Wouldn’t that be hilarious? To end up getting yourself killed because you stupidly got zombies to chase you until they just…caught up to you?

Oh, wait, no, that wouldn’t be hilarious…it’d be stupid.

So, how, then, do you “make it count” in a zombie apocalypse?

Well, first of all, make sure you’re doing something worthwhile. Any jerk can go around robbing or ambushing other survivors for what little they may have, or doing God only knows what sort of more nefarious things, but, if you’re trying to maintain or rebuilt what was lost, you’re heading in the right direction. Yeah, you can’t look past the dead, but, you also have to realize that they won’t be around forever, and, that we need to start building for that day when they’re finally gone.

I will say that building a community has a whole other set of issues that go along with it, like, being careful who you take in (No one wants a “That Guy” in their midst), preparing for herds or hostiles, preparing for disasters, etc., but, that’s another rant for another day.

Now that I think about it, it occurs to me that, whether we like it or not, the zombie apocalypse may force us to be reckless at times. If you find yourself in a situation where recklessness is a prerequisite, make sure you’re at least doing it for a good reason.

Being reckless for the sake of bravado or glory or “fun”? Bad reason.
Being reckless to save the lives of people in your group? Good reason.

If you’re going to be reckless, make sure that it’s to save somebody. If the worst should happen, at least it won’t be in vain. Make it count for something.

Lastly, since the worst could happen quite easily, don’t let a day go by without letting the people you care about know how you feel about them.

It might sound cliche, but, trust me, if something happens to those people, and you don’t do it, that sort of thing can haunt you, for a loooong time.

So, if you have friends, family, or loved ones in your group, especially if you (Or they) are doing something that puts you/them in harm’s way, don’t forget to let them know how you feel. For all you know, it may be the last opportunity you get to do it.

We only get one life, and, in a zombie apocalypse, that one life can become much shorter than we expect. As such, make sure that you make that life worth a damn. Don’t waste it being reckless unless you have no other choice (Like, having to save someone), do something worthwhile with it, enjoy it whenever possible, and never let the people you care about go without knowing that you care about them. We get one shot, we gotta make it count.
