The five main characters of The Walking Dead spinoff revealed that the kids who grew up in safety leave to discover the real world.

It’s a tale as old as time: Young people, convinced that there is more “out there”, leave the relative safety of their homes to find out what lies beyond the walls. In the new spinoff of The Walking Dead, the show’s concept puts a fresh spin on the classic trope by adding an apocalypse and the undead.

Most adventure stories begin when someone, usually a young person, takes off in search of adventure and a better life. For many of those adventurers, they have lived their lives being told that where they are is the best option out there. However, being told is one thing, and finding out for one’s self is another.

The sneak peek of the new spinoff of The Walking Dead features five youngsters who leave the safety and security of their compound, wherever that might be, so that they can learn more about the apocalyptic world around them. These young people grew up behind the walls, tucked away from the undead outside. Now they want to understand the world that they will someday inherit, and that involves leaving.

The teaser hints that this adventure will be full of danger, and that this is a side of The Walking Dead Universe that fans have never seen before. Some of these young people will emerge as heroes while others will become villains. Clearly, whatever they encounter outside of the walls will change them forever.

For these young people, there will never be a backpacking trip through Europe during a gap year. Instead, their journey of self-discovery comes in challenging the adults who have kept them inside the walls.

It’s something The Walking Dead fans have seen before. Carl, Enid and the Hilltop kids have all escaped from their communities to venture beyond the walls. While these nocturnal adventures were often innocent enough, this new series will also explore what happens when things go wrong and the young people are forced to choose which side they’re on.

The Walking Dead’s latest new series debuts in Spring 2020.
