Fear the Walking Dead fans have been hoping that Clark family matriarch Madison Clark is still alive, and it’s possible the show is setting up a massive return.

Massive speculation has been swirling around the Fear the Walking Dead fandom regarding recently surfaced photos that suggest Madison Clark’s return. But we want to shift focus to another reason why Madison’s return could be forthcoming.

During a recent conversation with @MischiefMaker4 on Twitter, the idea of Madison’s return came up in a way that could send shockwaves through the show. As Alicia continues her mission to honor her mother’s memory by helping people, what if Madison returned to the show as a villain?

Yeah, that’s right: Evil Madison, Good Alicia.

What’s a daughter to do?

The idea of Madison turning dark is one that has loomed large over Fear the Walking Dead for a while now. The thought is that Madison’s descent into darkness would have begun to take shape in season 4 had the show followed the events at the dam rather than going in the new direction seen under the leadership of showrunners Andrew Chambliss and Ian Goldberg.

It’s no secret that Chambliss and Goldberg’s arrival has been polarizing, with fans split about the show’s new direction. But I offer you this possible explanation: Everything that they’re doing is planned with an eye toward a larger purpose. They have been laying the foundation of a bigger story since they took over, and there’s a chance that Madison’s “death” was only setting up a bigger story for her later on.

Madison’s supposed death has given Alicia the ability to grow as a young woman and as a hero in the middle of the apocalypse. Alicia is so much stronger now after losing everyone she loved, and she has to rely on herself and the people around her.

If Madison returned and was on the other side, it would present quite the quandary for Alicia. Now that she’s on a mission to help people, would she fall in line with her mother’s dark ways? And how would Madison react to Nick’s death and Charlie’s presence?

The reality is that it doesn’t actually matter if Alicia reunited with her mother or not, because watching this scenario play out would be entertaining either way. Alycia Debnam-Carey has been a dynamic force on the show, and seeing her navigate the complexities of such a reunion would be great.
