Showrunner Andrew Chambliss broke down the Fear the Walking Dead season 5 timeline at SDCC ahead of the show’s mid-season premiere on August 11.

Fear the Walking Dead returns on August 11 for the second half of season 5 and now that everyone is back together it’s time to look ahead to the mid-season premiere. During San Diego Comic-Con we learned about the season 5 timeline so far and how it plays into the second half of the season.

Given that things moved so quickly throughout the first half of the season, starting with the plane crash in the opening minutes, the passage of time in season 5 has always been on my mind.

During the Fear the Walking Dead press conference at SDCC I asked showrunner Andrew Chambliss about the season 5 timeline. Specifically, I wanted to know how much time passed between 501 and 508, and then how much time passed between 508 and 509. Here’s what he said:

"Between 501 and 508, that’s a concentrated chunk of time. It’s a matter of a week or so that our characters are stuck on the other side of that mountain. And then when we come back in 509 – and I don’t want to give away too much – but we will be jumping ahead a little bit and finding our characters in circumstances that they have been in for several months."

At the end of 5A the group was finally reunited after spending the majority of the first half of the season on different sides of the mountain range. While being apart yielded a fair number of challenges for both groups, in the end both groups ended up making new friends and reuniting with old friends.

In 5B the group will work together to determine Logan’s motives behind defending the oil fields, and thanks to the minor time jump fans will have the opportunity to see the new group after enough time has passed for them to learn how to work together.

Naturally, there will be some bumps in the road given how large the group has become, especially with the addition of the kids. Then again, it will be a chance for Dwight and Morgan to work together for the first time and that will be fun to see.

Fear the Walking Dead returns on August 11 at 9pm on AMC.
