The Walking Dead speculation: Gamma’s role in the Whisperers

Thora Birch has been cast as Gamma on The Walking Dead. She is a member of the ruthless group The Whispers, who have been the latest opposition the group has encountered.

The latest addition to The Walking Dead cast has fans speculating as to how she will fit into the show. Thora Birch joins the cast as Gamma, a member of The Whisperers who is unfailingly loyal to their leader, Alpha. What might we expect from this intriguing new character?

Birch is probably most famous for her role in American Beauty but she is a well seasoned actress. She starred in many movies and series. including Hocus Pocus, Ghost World and Now and Then.

With the addition of Gamma to The Whisperers it will be interesting to see where she fits in. Beta seems to be Alpha’s right hand man who basically does her bidding with no remorse. Gamma seems to be third in line if we continue to use the Greek alphabet to determine who is who in the mostly nameless group. Will Gamma fit this mold as well?

Executive Producer Gale Anne Hurd had this to say of the new character:

"“She is going to be playing Gamma,” Hurd revealed. “She’s a Whisperer who is fiercely protective of Alpha, and a committed believer in the Whisperer way of life.”"

Could she be a replacement daughter since Alpha lost Lydia? Lydia obviously wasn’t cut out for the life her mother created for her. Perhaps Alpha felt she needed to find another ‘daughter’ that would do her bidding.

For Alpha to appoint her to #3 she must possess skills fitting the ruthlessness of Alpha and Beta.  Until now fans have not heard of anyone else having a name in this group. It shows her standing in the group and there’s hope we get some back story to Gamma.

Showrunner Angela Kang suggests that fans will learn more about her at SDCC:

"“I’ll say that Gamma is another Whisperer. We find out some interesting story about who Gamma is, and who she’s close to in the camp,” showrunner Angela Kang divulged at San Diego Comic-Con."

Comic book readers will know that Gamma is unique to the series. But, seeing that the Whisperers have set rules and our group has disobeyed we can imagine her story line could be quite brutal. If the new trailer is any indication as to the pace of Season10 then fans are in for something amazing. Season 10 is set to debut on October 6.
