Morgan Can’t Shoot Jenny
Season 1 episode 1: “Days Gone Bye”
Sara L. says:
I want to start by saying Lennie James is a phenomenal actor, and from the moment we first meet Morgan and Duane I am just captivated by him. We see Rick wake up out of a coma to this horrifying world completely out of his element. Morgan is the person that saves him, starting the entire chain of events that is The Walking Dead.
He is the first hardened person we see that kills without hesitation and has the knowledge Rick desperately needs. The entire episode we see him as a very confident, strong father. Then we see what has happened to him, he stares down the barrel of his gun and looks at his beloved wife. For me, that’s when the show shifted from being just “some zombie show,” to be real and personal.
Real people, their stories, how they got to that point and what the cost of life really is in a world like this. I’ll never forget him pulling out the beautiful photo of Jenny while she is alive, the image is forever burned into my memory.
Even just this act, of not shooting the zombified version of his wife has shaped who he is as a character which in turn as effected 2 shows, many communities and countless characters. It took two massive journeys across the country for him to even consider saying goodbye to his family. This moment will always remain iconic to me, as well as important to the universe as a whole.
