You may wish people were better in a zombie apocalypse, but, as was clear in this week’s Fear the Walking Dead, people are people, and DON’T work that way.

“People are people.” That was what Wes, the young man Alicia and Strand met on this week’s episode of Fear the Walking Dead, kept saying. It was his cynical outlook on people, sharpened considerably since the apocalypse set in.

And, you know something? He’s right.

In a zombie apocalypse, if you have this idea that people are going to become superheroes to meet the challenge of the undead, you are going to be sorely mistaken.

This is because people are, inherently, flawed. Chances are, even the best of us will wind up slightly broken by the things we’ll have to see and do when the dead rise.

How that will manifest in people is anyone’s guess, and will vary from one person to the next. One person may become hopeless, another may become aggressive, another still might just turn completely evil. You just can’t tell.

Of course, because people are flawed, there are already some people who are selfish, greedy, jealous, duplicitous, malicious, or violent, and will continue to be once the apocalypse hits.

In many instances, people don’t change. If you know someone who’s a violent bully, or a greedy backstabber, chances are, a few dead people walking around isn’t going to change that.

Another thing that won’t change? People’s willingness to use your weaknesses against you. If there’s something that touches a nerve with you, rest assured, someone will try to exploit it. That’s just how people are.

On the flip side of that, if you come across a person (Or group of people) going around pretending that, despite the chaos and destruction all around them, that they’re perfectly fine, and everything’s hunky-dory, you’d best steer clear of them, as they are probably hiding some literal skeletons in their closet.

But, people aren’t all bad. People also have an amazing capacity for compassion. If you know someone who was the kind of person who helped others not to get something out of it, but, because they wanted to, I’m willing to bet the apocalypse hasn’t changed them, either.

The zombie apocalypse will affect all of us. It will force us to see and do horrible things, and those things will change us. However, one thing the apocalypse can’t change is the fact that people are still people, both for good, and for bad.
