Andrea’s death and burial
Season 3 episode 16: “Welcome to the Tombs”
Jeffrey says:
The death of Andrea at the end of the third season is one that is still controversial to this day. I have always been bitter about the fact that she was killed so early into the series. That being said, I have always been so emotionally moved by her death scene and the aftermath. My top moment isn’t her death itself, but the final scene of the season when Rick and the others bring her body to the Prison.
There’s so much to unpack as we see our group return to the Prison from Woodbury. Carol, Hershel, Beth, Carl, and the others emerge to learn that Andrea has died. They also see that a bus full of Woodbury’s elderly and children residents have been brought to the Prison after being abandoned by the Governor. With the exception of Carl, who is angry about how things are playing out, they welcome the newcomers in with open arms. This is precisely what Andrea would have wanted.
There’s a particular moment in which Rick looks up at the walkway where he used to see a hallucination of Lori staring back at him. This time, he doesn’t see her. Now, he’s finally free from the immense weight he felt after she died. He’s now able to move forward and do everything he can to keep Carl and Judith safe. It’s a moment of release for him that moves him out of the frantic state he was in for much of the season.
The final shot of this season is so poignant. It shows a wooden cross to mark Andrea’s grave. While she spent almost the entire season at Woodbury, essentially aligned with the Governor, she was still family. Rick and the others brought their fallen friend home where she always belonged but was never able to stay permanently. As devastating as it was to lose Andrea, there’s some solace to be had in the fact that she found some peace in her final moment as Michonne, Rick and Daryl surrounded her and assured her that she would always be family. By them burying her at the prison, that solidified it.
