Honorable Mentions

While these moments didn’t make the cut as our favorite moments they were moments that had a dramatic impact on the story or on the fans and deserve a mention as major parts of The Walking Dead season 3:

Hershel gets bitten

Season 3 episode 2: “Sick”

As the group valiantly tries to clear the prison Hershel is bitten in the leg and it looks like he may not survive. Frantically they chop off his leg hoping that they can stop the infection from spreading and killing him, although the blood loss, shock, and trauma may kill him. It was unthinkable at that time to lose Hershel, who was a beloved character already at that point. Hershel did survive and he managed to find ways to get around on one leg. Eventually, they built him a reasonable prosthetic that helped. But that moment changed the trajectory of Hershel’s story forever.

Daryl Chooses His Family

Season 3 episode 10: “Home”

After escaping from Woodbury, where the Governor tried to force Merle and Daryl to fight each other, the group splinters. Daryl is torn between wanting to be with Rick and his family at the prison but feeling like he owes loyalty to Merle, his actual brother. Merle can’t come to the prison because he kidnapped and beat Glenn and Maggie. Daryl chooses Merle, but regrets it almost instantly.

After finding some people with a baby in trouble Daryl helps them and tells them to go on their way. Merle didn’t want to help them, and after grudgingly helping them he wanted to rob them. Daryl makes the decision to go back to the prison. That decision shows how much his character has grown and changed by that point and it’s a beautiful moment of courage where Daryl, for the first time, does what is right for him and not what’s right for Merle.

Michonne Can Stay

Season 3 episode 12: “Clear”

Rick still had his doubts about Michonne when he allowed her to go on a run with them to Morgan’s to get guns to fight the Governor. That day Michonne helps Carl rescue a photo of the Grimes family from a bar because Carl wants to show Judith her family and wants her to grow up knowing what Lori looked like. Michonne and Carl open up to each other and bond in a very meaningful way. After the run, as they are heading back, Carl tells Rick to let Michonne stay because she’s one of them.

That moment really sealed Michonne’s fate and started a journey that would lead to her and Rick developing a strong and lasting love and a child, RJ.
