A war against the Whisperers is set for in season 10 of The Walking Dead, but how much of the blame should be put on Alpha and her people for the conflict?

The Whisperers are an interesting group on The Walking Dead. Unlike the Saviors, they don’t want half of everyone’s stuff. Unlike the Governor, Alpha doesn’t want control of a settlement. And, unlike Terminus, they don’t want to eat the survivors. Actually, what the Whisperers really is quite simple: To be left alone.

So far, a lot of the conflict that has happened between our favorite characters on the show and the Whisperers has occurred because of something the group directly did to Alpha’s people that they shouldn’t have.

Here are some examples of things that led to death or conflict between the groups which could have been easily avoided:

  • You’ve been warned! The group was told they weren’t welcome in that area. Still, they fought back against the undead during their rescue efforts for Eugene which resulted in the death of Jesus.
  • Taking a hostage. Killing Lydia in cold blood would have been harsh, but that didn’t stop the group from letting the other Whisperers die. Their intention wasn’t even to help her when they took her, but to interrogate her for information. Even then, they had no intention of letting her go.
  • A more than fair trade. Alpha gave back two individuals for Lydia in a trade at the Hilltop but that still wasn’t good enough. Henry’s actions followed by an assault on the Whisperers camp left Alpha with no other choice but to take action against them and let people know her people are out there.
  • Hiring assassins to clear the way. Rather than avoid the Whisperers, the Kingdom hired the Highwaymen to keep the roads clean, once again showing no respect to Alpha or her territory. For this, they set up the border wall, with the heads on pikes.
  • Crossing the border…again. In a snowstorm, the Kingdom crossed that border knowing the damage the Whisperers can do and possibly putting the Hilltop in danger. For now, it looks like they may have gotten away with that one, but they appear to be testing the waters again by crossing the line in the season 10 trailer.

Keep in mind that the Whisperers are not good people. The way Alpha and her group live may keep them alive, but it’s nothing like how people used to live before the breakdown of civilization. At no point should walking around in masks made of human flesh and fearing for your life because your leader has total power ever become the norm.

However, the people from the Kingdom, Hilltop, and Alexandria never even attempted much of a friendly approach with their neighbors. Not once.

The Whisperer War is coming in season 10 of The Walking Dead. Many more lives are likely to be lost because of how the situation with Alpha and the Whisperers was handled. The question that has to be asked at this point is how Rick Grimes would have handed this threat and if things would have turned out differently…because they likely would have.
