The world of The Walking Dead is one of death and destruction, and keeping the hope alive is a very important factor for Fear the Walking Dead.

Season 5 of Fear the Walking Dead has seen the group on the road trying to help people. It was a mission that started at the end of season 4 and it has gained strength as more and more people make themselves known to Morgan and the rest of the group. Some viewers are understandably perplexed by this desire to help people, but all you need to do it turn on the news after a disaster to see that helping people is part of our DNA.

If ever you need a reminder about the power of hope and the sheer irrepressibility of the human spirit, take a look at what happens immediately following some of our darkest moments. Whether it’s a natural disaster, an act of terrorism or the horrors of a mass shooting, communities come together to help each other. Strangers offer up their homes to other strangers who have lost everything in a storm, or they organize food or blood drives to help victims in need.

No matter what the situation, there is always an outpouring of help from others, whether it’s at a local, state, national or even international level.

Fear the Walking Dead season 5 is the embodiment of that ideal. Instead of hiding in a bunker with all of their supplies, the group is hitting the road to find people who need help and they’re offering that help freely. By contrast, Logan is the guy who would hike prices prior to a natural disaster to pocket the profits instead of trying to help.

At face value, of course it seems like an insane proposition. After all, when you’re trying to survive the last thing you do is risk your life and your supplies. However, that’s exactly what people do time and time again. We see it every time a hurricane strikes, or after an earthquake or during historic flooding. We see people coming together to help because that’s the human thing to do.

The desire to help people shouldn’t seem strange at all because it’s something that people do on a regular basis outside of the zombie apocalypse.

It might be foolish to offer help so freely, and goodness knows that it will probably lead to trouble later on in season 5 as Logan tries to gain access to the oil fields. But in the end the desire to help people prevails because even in our darkest moments, people always rally to support people in need.

Fear the Walking Dead airs Sundays at 9pm on AMC.
