The Walking Dead has joined forces with star Lauren Ridloff to help teach the TWD Family several important words in American Sign Language.

When Connie arrived on The Walking Dead, some fans wondered how a deaf character could possibly survive in the zombie apocalypse. As it happens, she’s doing just fine and having the ability to send messages without speaking has come in very handy. The Walking Dead has teamed with actress Lauren Ridloff ahead of season 10 to help fans learn some American Sign Language along the way.

Thanks to sign language, Luke was able to send messages to Connie while she was hiding in the corn field, allowing her to rescue the Whisperer baby that had been left to die.

Now, Ridloff is helping to teach The Walking Dead audience some words that might come in handy in season 10.

This first of what we hope to be a series of videos features Ridloff teaching words that have to do with relationships and family. She teaches the words “mother” and “father” as pictures of Rosita and Siddiq are shown onscreen. Then we see Gabriel and Eugene and learn the words “boyfriend” and “friend.” The last word is “child” because baby Coco is coming soon.

Learning American Sign Language is something that should be compulsory in elementary school so that kids grow up with the ability to communicate with hard of hearing people that they encounter. As it is, it’s a very popular course in upper grades and even at some colleges. (Learning languages is a lot easier for younger kids, though, so being taught early on would be incredibly helpful) For the rest of us, we’ll be learning ASL along with Ridloff ahead of the show’s October return.
