Where Fear the Walking Dead landed in the August 19-25 ratings
Now that ratings for the week of August 19-15 have been released, Fear the Walking Dead landed in very positive territory.
Each week the website TV By The Numbers releases ratings information for every show on television. For the week of August 19-25, AMC’s Fear the Walking Dead ended up in the top-25 for the week and it’s a sign that the show is doing well in terms of ratings.
According to TV By The Numbers, Fear the Walking Dead landed at No. 25 on the list of top cable shows for Live+3 views among the coveted 18-49 year old demographic for the week of August 19-25. To be clear: That’s not top-25 for Sunday night – that’s the top-25 out of all the cable shows for the entire week.
When it comes to Sunday ratings, Fear the Walking Dead landed at No. 5 for the night of August 25, remaining solid with a 0.4 for the third week in a row.
Landing in the top-25 for the week indicates that a show is doing well. Not only do the ratings fare well for the night a show airs, but they’re strong enough to compete with every other show for the entire week. If the show’s ratings weren’t healthy, then AMC would probably want to make changes.
There is a very vocal group of fans on social media who aren’t happy with the direction of the show, and the question that invariably comes up from these fans is why doesn’t AMC change the show given how many fans on social media are upset? The answer is simple: It’s the ratings.
It’s not to say that unhappy fans’ opinions aren’t valid or don’t deserve to be acknowledged. The reality is that it’s nearly impossible to make a show that appeals to everyone. However, unless ratings decline – and landing in the top-25 for the week, along with consistently landing in the top 5 on Sunday nights, doesn’t constitute a decline – there is no reason to change.
Fear the Walking Dead was given a green light for season 6, which means AMC has full confidence in the show to continue the story as the current showrunners see fit.
There’s also the important distinction that “ratings” aren’t what they used to be. With so many ways to watch a show, between watching live, watching from a DVR recording, watching on demand later in the week, or watching via a streaming service or on AMC Premiere, it’s hard to pin down what ratings actually mean these days. Any way you look at it, though, landing in the top-25 is a big accomplishment amid so much competition for viewers these days.
Based on these numbers, Fear the Walking Dead is performing very well and continues to perform solidly on Sunday nights and overall in weekly ratings.
