Fear The Walking Dead, Ner Tamid: Things To Note
By Liam O'Leary
1) Rabbi Kessner’s quip to the infected outside his door “If you were alive, I’d let you in…” is funny when one thinks of the last major holy man in a Walking Dead show, Father Gabriel, and his history with letting people into his house of worship.
2) Speaking of men of the cloth, Rabbi Kessner is the first we’ve met in Fear The Walking Dead since Daniel met Efrain Morales in Season Three, and the first Rabbi we’ve met in either show.
3) This episode gets its name from the light inside Rabbi Kessner’s synagogue which, as the Rabbi explains, is called Ner Tamid, “The Flame Of Truth”, i.e. a symbol of the presence of God.
4) This episode’s title sequence features Al’s SWAT van (With its back door open revealing a light (The Ner Tamid?) glowing inside), sitting in a field as a storm gathers. Considering how the episode ends, this is a nice bit of subtle foreshadowing.
5) As the episode returns from commercial, we watch as the convoy sets up its perimeter. Of all the various convoy-style groups we’ve seen in the Walking Dead universe (Think of Martinez’s group in Season Four of Walking Dead, or the Atlanta camp, for example), Morgan’s convoy has the best, most coordinated defensive perimeter of any thus far.
