Fear The Walking Dead, Survival Rule Of The Week: Harsh realities
By Liam O'Leary
Fear The Walking Dead is a TV show set in a zombie apocalypse, but, if you were in an ACTUAL zombie apocalypse, you’d face some harsh realities.
I think people get this weird idea sometimes that a zombie apocalypse would be easy. Maybe they’re desensitized by so many zombie-themed TV shows or movies; I don’t know.
Whatever the case may be, I think it’s my duty to ensure that people are ready for the apocalypse as best as possible, and I believe the best way to do that is impressing upon people the reality that would come with such an event, specifically, that it won’t be as easy as the media may depict it.
If there’s one thing I appreciate about Fear The Walking Dead it’s the fact that things rarely go perfectly in it.
Why? Because it’s accurate.
I mean, who are we kidding? Things go bad, sometimes, it just happens: You weren’t in time, you got lost, it was tougher than you thought, whatever the case may be, bad things happen. If it happens now, that damn sure won’t change with a few million zombies lurking around.
The most common reason things go bad is also the simplest: Things happen that we either aren’t aware of, or simply, that we can’t control. Hordes of zombies could be attracted by random noises, or an enemy could suddenly have a dangerous stroke of genius, and, before you know it, you’re sort of left holding the bag trying to figure out your next move.
The next most common way things go bad? We just…screw up.
We aren’t perfect. We don’t live in a perfect world, and, to assume that things will go perfect for you is both incredibly shortsighted and incredibly stupid. Failure is always an option, whether we like it or not.
Another harsh reality we all need to accept is that, in a zombie apocalypse, we all need to be self-reliant.
I always encourage being part of a group, but, the sad fact is…we don’t know if our group will be around forever. If we’re relying on X person to do certain vital things for us, and then they’re suddenly gone? We’re up the creek without a paddle.
And, speaking of the creek, sometimes, in a zombie apocalypse, we’re going to have to do things, maybe even horrible things that we don’t like, just to survive. If you have to eat something gross to survive, you do it. If you have to do something repulsive, like hiding amongst a pile of zombie corpses, you do it.
In a fight for survival, we may have to throw away some of our sensibilities if we want to keep breathing.
This is why you follow…The Rules.
