The world within the Fear the Walking Dead universe has gotten bigger with the addition of the Pioneers, but do they have a connection to the season 3 preppers?

Before his untimely death in season 3, Jake Otto was about to leave Broke Jaw Ranch with Alicia because he said there were other prepper communities out there. Now that Virginia and her people have arrived on Fear the Walking Dead, we have to wonder whether there is a connection between the season 3 preppers and the Pioneers.

Fear the Walking Dead season 3 introduced a group of people living in a post-apocalyptic society. They were all doomsday preppers, living and breathing by the Jeremiah Otto playbook at Broke Jaw Ranch. Madison and her family arrived at the ranch after being “processed” at a military base where Otto’s son Troy was conducting sadistic experiments on his prisoners.

After the base was overrun by walkers, the Clark family, with Luciana in tow, ended up at Broke Jaw Ranch. Later, it was Otto’s older son Jake who revealed that there was a whole network of preppers all over the place, with communities as far as Colorado. If Jake hadn’t met with an unfortunate end, he and Alicia might have ended up there.

The Pioneers don’t seem to have a connection to Isabelle’s group. After all, they just got gas…or so Ginny says. Given that they have several established communities all over, could it be that they are connected to the preppers? Did the preppers pick up and move? Both groups certainly seem to know what they’re doing and they have all of the tools needed to survive.

It’s the level of preparation that suggests a connection between the preppers and the Pioneers. Both groups were incredibly well-suited for the apocalypse and it stands to reason that the preppers would still be out there somewhere. Maybe they decided to expand their sphere of influence, and that’s how we ended up with the Pioneers.

On a side note, it was reported that Troy Otto (Daniel Sharman) was set to return in season 5 and that rumor turned out to be false. However, it’s worth noting that if he was ever going to show up, it seems like he’d fit right in with the Pioneers and their methods.
