Fear The Walking Dead, Channel 5: Things To Note
By Liam O'Leary
1) This episode begins with a shot of Virginia and her posse riding towards the camera on horseback (Which, strangely, looks very similar to when Logan first saw them in his flashback in episode thirteen, “Leave What You Don’t”), before cutting to part of Tom’s interview from the previous episode, “Today And Tomorrow”.
2) After we catch a portion of Tom’s interview (Wherein he recounts Paradise Ridge’s water being fouled and inhibiting their ability to grow food), we see snippets of interviews from three more people named Ellen, Cleve, and Kenneth (Although they aren’t introduced formally) and hear a voiceover from a fourth person named Terrence. Are they the leaders of the other communities under the umbrella of The Pioneers, the way Tom was for Paradise Ridge?
3) Considering that this episode is named “Channel 5”, and appears much like Al’s documentary-style promo video for the convoy from the mid-season opener, “Channel 4”, Virginia is clearly trying to use the same tactic to promote The Pioneers, but…how did she manage to cut a clip from Tom’s interview so quickly? She only had access to Al’s tape for a few hours. How did she copy it?
4) Incidentally, as I suspected last week, it turns out that one of The Pioneers bases (The one Cleve talks about in his interviews) is, in fact, a bowling alley. This, presumably, is the “SuperLanes” we saw on the Pioneers map in “Today And Tomorrow”.
5) The other settlements, though not named (As opposed to Paradise Ridge and SuperLanes), are a logging camp, a recreation center/skating rink, and a country club.
6) As evidenced in the video clips (Wherein we see him repair Morgan’s stick), Terrence is the woodworker Virginia referenced in “Today And Tomorrow” as Morgan and Al were leaving Paradise Ridge.
7) Clearly, The Pioneers, in stealing both The Convoy’s mantra, “We’re here to help”, and their means of self-promotion, are acting as a perverted mirror-version of The Convoy.
