Fear the Walking Dead takes a decidedly dark turn in the season 5 finale after a season spent trying to keep hope alive for the caravan of survivors.

When The Walking Dead season 6 bowed for the season finale, fans were left staring down the barrel of Negan’s baseball bat. The Walking Dead is known for big stories spinning out of the season finale, and the season 5 finale of Fear the Walking Dead just made a bid for one of the bleakest moments in the show’s history, if not one for franchise record books.

“End of the Line” was already an ominous title. After Morgan was forced to call upon Virginia and the Pioneers in last week’s “Channel 5” there was little doubt that something big was about to happen, but fans were left guessing until the finale.

For a brief moment there was a glimmer of hope in the season finale. Dwight found horses, and together the group was able to lead the walkers from the Gulch and guide them to a spot where they could ambush Virginia. It almost worked. Luciana showed up with Virginia’s people (which was a totally calculated move on their part to travel with a pawn), and Dwight’s horse was eaten by the walkers.

When their one chance at making it without Virginia’s help failed, the group came together for John and June’s wedding so that their last moments together would be happy ones.

It was all they had, because things got dark when Virginia showed up.
