Fear the Walking Dead season 5 finale review: Divided we fall
Virginia Proves She’s a Big Bad
Over the years we have seen a smorgasbord of villains in The Walking Dead Universe: Negan, the Governor, the hungry folks at Terminus. Fear the Walking Dead has never really had true villains. Logan was a placeholder for something bigger to arrive.
Season 1 saw the United States Government as the big bad, while season 2 featured Celia’s meltdown and a handful of bad people wandering through Mexico. Jeremiah Otto was a bad person, but he wasn’t exactly a villain by TWD standards, and Madison ended up working with him (and Troy) in order to ensure her family’s safety. The Proctors never amounted to much. And the Filthy Woman managed to poison everyone, but she was more unhinged than evil.

Virginia is different. She has her own set of rules, and she doesn’t let people know what they are. Unlike Negan, who values life as a resource, Virginia sees some people as extra mouths to feed, thus rendering them useless. If not for Morgan’s protestations, the group’s elderly, injured and sick would have been killed or left to die.
Dwight sees how dangerous Virginia is. He knows firsthand what it’s like to be forced to align with people like that, and he is terrified of what could come from asking her for help. Daniel, too, know what it’s like to work among evil people. After all, as a soldier he was forced to commit terrible acts under the guise of “doing what’s right.”
Virginia seems to delight in her power and her ability to wield her power as she sees fit. She’s like the kid who was bullied in elementary school who gains power as the hall monitor in high school, down to her smug smile.
She even rolled up on the Gulch in the SWAT van just to rub it in their faces.
The moment they asked for her help, the group signed off on their freedom. They have no choice anymore, and that’s exactly what Virginia seems to want. She’s ruthless, and she will stop at nothing to get what she wants.
The fact that she was willing to look Morgan in the eye and pull the trigger says it all: This woman is dangerous. Very dangerous.
In the echelon of TWD Universe villains, she proved in the season finale that she’s near the top of the list.
