Carol And Daryl Face Death Together

Season 5 Episode 6 “Consumed”

Sonya says:

I really loved this episode because I love Carol and I felt like there was a lot of development for her in this episode. But this episode also strengthened and deepened her relationship with Daryl. There were some beautiful moments where the two bonded over their traumatic pasts and showed how their respective pasts prepared them to survive in the post-apocalypse world.

But my favorite moment was when they had to take shelter from a herd in an ambulance that was hanging precariously on the overpass bridge. As the herd closed in they realized their only option was to crash the ambulance off the bridge, realizing there was a good chance they wouldn’t survive the fall. But dying together that way was preferable to being torn apart by a herd.

It as a very honest moment where the two of them, who had faced death so many times before, held hands and faced their fate together. They rocked until the vehicle loosened and crashed down off the overpass. Thankfully they weren’t killed, although they were banged up.

To me, this moment really summed up without words the bond that has always existed between these two. They understand each other on a deep level and recognize in each other the wounds of long-term trauma as well as the strength, resilience, and intelligence it takes to survive.
