Alexandria Fights As One

Season 6, Episode 9, “No Way Out”

Jeffrey says:

This is widely considered to be one of the greatest, if not the greatest, episode of The Walking Dead to date. It certainly is my favorite. The reason for this is because it emphasizes just how important family and teamwork is. With a massive herd of walkers having infiltrated Alexandria, things looked extremely dire for our band of survivors. There was truly no way out.

The tone of the episode dramatically shifts as Rick rushes out to clear walkers near the infirmary. Having witnessed the entire Anderson family be devoured and his son Carl be shot in the eye, Rick was filled with rage and determination. He wasn’t going to allow this home to be destroyed. The act of him fighting the herd alone inspired his people and the members of the community to join him. In this moment, we see the Alexandrians find their inner strength and risk everything to defend their home.

The reason this is my favorite moment of the season (and of the entire series) is due to the fact that there is no more “us versus them” within Alexandria. Rick sees his whole band of survivors and the reluctant members of the community join forces. They fight side-by-side through the night as fires rage and as blood covers their bodies to assure that this oasis in apocalypse does not fall. The awe-inspiring edit of the survivors slashing at the camera before cutting to Rick to deliver the final blow is the epitome of what this show is all about.

Another huge reason this moment is such a standout is due to the musical score. We all know that Bear McCreary is a musical genius, but he really outdid himself with the score that plays as the Alexandrians fight. Adding that to the stunning cinematography makes for pure cinematic art. The walkers slowly stumbling into the water and fire, and the flames reflecting on the faces of the characters never gets old to watch.
