Deanna’s Last Stand
Season 6 Episode 8, “Start to Finish”
Sara L. says:
Picking a moment from this season proved to be much more difficult than I thought, season 6 just had that many amazing moments for me. Deanna’s last moments are something that has stayed with me for a long time. I have always found Deanna and Aaron to both be vastly underrated characters. From the moment our group stumbles upon Alexandria, Aaron is willing to do anything it takes while it seems most of Alexandria is weak. Deanna, however, is someone I think to be an exception to that rule.
Slowly but surely our group finds itself in leadership positions all over Alexandria and it is something Deanna even brings up to Maggie. It’s also something that worries her and rightfully so, we see this community has gone relatively unscathed compared to some of the intense tragedy our main group has endured. She is always inquiring about happenings as an active leader should, and always staying strong for her people. She even helps our characters feel at home by giving them jobs as she is a very good judge of character.
When Deanna was bitten I was very heartbroken, she was a character that I had come to love so to know her demise was closing in was saddening. She took time on her death bed to talk to Michonne and it was quite inspiring. She told Michonne she was lucky because in life she got to do exactly what she wanted, then she asked Michonne what she wanted. Michonne is already a very fiery, and passionate person when she didn’t have all the answers for Deanna you can see that some fire was added to her already fierce demeanor.
In the very end, Deanna considers taking her own life with the pistol she has. However, she hears walkers coming to the room she is in and decides she is going to stand up and fight it out. She empties her gun on the walkers coming towards her and then she unleashes a battle cry. Deaths on this show rarely feel empowering, but this one made my heart happy. I was sad to see her go of course, but to go out with all that glory certainly made me cheer for her in those final moments.
