Jesus Appears

Season 6, Episode 10, “The Next World”

Tim says:

My favorite moment of the sixth season of The Walking Dead is the entire episode The Next World. It’s a hilarious Rick and Daryl adventure that brings what passes for comic relief to the show, one episode after a whole bunch of Alexandrians met their maker. Not only that, but it introduces Jesus, and sets up the introductions to Hilltop, and later, the Saviors and the Kingdom.

Meeting Jesus is a hoot. He says they’re all on the same side – “the living side” – and when he says he’s alone, Rick knows he has a camp or settlement to return to. Rick knows this because Jesus is too clean to be out there scavenging.

Yes, many people love this episode for Rick and Michonne getting together. And that’s a great moment. But the arrival of Jesus means that the Alexandrians aren’t alone.

Not to mention that Jesus is an interesting character. He’s quick-witted, able to find his way around, and not easily kept captured. Makes for a good ally – or a tough enemy.

We all know that Jesus becomes a great ally to our gang, although he is a bit too reluctant to reveal the true nature of the Saviors and their deal with Hilltop at first. He’s trying to do the right thing from his perspective, but it puts Rick’s group in a tough spot.

Of course, all that takes place in the next episode. In this one, we get a comical fight with Daryl, Jesus’ escape, and the hookup of all show hookups. But first, we get hope from Jesus that Alexandria isn’t just not alone, but there are friends out there in the world.
