“Glenn Made The Decision Rick”

Season 7, episode 16, “The First Day Of The Rest Of Your Life”

Sonya says:

This whole season was difficult for me. I loved Glenn and losing him was devastating but seeing Maggie’s grief made the loss even worse. At the end of the battle when the communities had beaten Negan and the Saviors and they were cleaning up the montage of all the communities coming together and Maggie’s speech to Rick was an emotional reminder of everything that they were fighting for, and everything that the ones they had lost would want them to fight for. It still makes me cry. And I think this one moment summarizes very well what it is that makes The Walking Dead so special. The beating heart of this show is the relationships between the survivors, and the humanity that they fight for every day.

Hershel’s watch that he gave to Glenn has become the symbol of humanity on The Walking Dead so it was only appropriate that Maggie was holding the watch as she gave her speech to inspire the communities. I’m sure that Glenn, and Hershel, were very proud of Maggie, and Rick, at that moment. And I’m sure that Maggie will pass that watch on to baby Hershel with many stories about what kind, good, and decent men his father and grandfather were.

Maggie’s speech:

"The decision was made a long time ago. Before any of us knew each other. We were all strangers who would have just passed each other on the street before the world ended. But now we mean everything to each other. You were in trouble. You were trapped. Glenn didn’t know you but he helped you. He put himself in danger for you. And that started it all. From Atlanta, to my daddy’s farm, to the prison, to here. To this moment now – not as strangers; as family – because Glenn chose to be there for you, that day a long time ago – that was the decision that changed everything. It started with both of you and it just grew, all of this: to sacrifice for each other, to suffer and stand, to grieve, to give, to love, to live, to fight for each other. Glenn made the decision, Rick. I was just following his lead."
