Just before the season 10 premiere showrunner Angela Kang confirmed at New York Comic-Con  that The Walking Dead will return for season 11.

The Walking Dead is getting ready to kick off season 10 on Sunday but already has an early renewal for season 11. Angela Kang announced at the show’s New York Comic-Con panel that TWD will return for season 11.

The early renewal demonstrates AMC’s commitment to The Walking Dead universe. Executives at AMC have repeatedly said that they see a lot of life in the franchise and have doubled down on making TWD universe one of their largest properties. Fear The Walking Dead will be returning for season 6 and a new spinoff set in the same universe is filming now and will air in the spring of 2020.

Additionally, there are at least three feature films set in The Walking Dead universe coming and the characters that fans already love like Rick Grimes will be the focus of the films. It was announced by Scott Gimple at the NYCC panel that more news about the feature films will be coming in the next month or so.

It’s not a huge surprise that the show picked up a renewal for season 11 but the early timing shows that the network has a lot of confidence in the changes that Angela Kang made when she took over as showrunner in season 9. She successfully navigated the departure of Andrew Lincoln and managed to expand the narrative in an interesting way that fans overall were very happy with.

How Long Will The Walking Dead Run?

There’s been a lot of speculation about exactly how long the flagship show could run. Series originals Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride have three-year contracts in place right now, which is a good indication that the show is expected to continue for several seasons to come. AMC executives have said that the show could run for 20 seasons or more. They likened it to franchises like Star Trek which have created many spinoffs and other properties all set within the same universe.
