Henry Goes To Save Lydia
Season 9, Episode 11 “Bounty”
When Henry (Matt Lintz) decided to leave the Hilltop in pursuit of Lydia (Cassady McClincy), a majority of fans were furious. They thought that it was a stupid choice to make and that he would only put himself – and possibly others – in danger.
I, however, was a big fan of this moment because, while reckless, it reflected a belief in doing the right thing to help others that the show had been lacking since the departure of the group’s moral compass, Glenn (Steven Yeun).
In the previous episode, Lydia revealed her troubled past with her abusive mother, leading Henry to believe that she is “a good person who got messed up out there.” When he saw that the Hilltop was sending Lydia back to a life of abuse with the Whisperers, he couldn’t “live with it” like Daryl (Norman Reedus) told him to, instead leaving to do the right thing and rescue Lydia.
Despite the immense danger and recklessness behind his decision, this moment showed that Henry is a good person with a strong moral code. Henry always tried to “stand up for what’s right, and… fight what’s wrong,” based on the lessons he learned over years of being raised by Carol (Melissa McBride) and King Ezekiel (Khary Payton). Living and learning under two people with such a strong will to survive and do right by the ones they love helped form Henry into a person who wants to help others no matter the cost, just like Glenn in previous seasons.
While I never expected Henry to become my new favorite character in season 9, moments like these where he tried to help people, like Lydia, who need it the most made me warm up to his character very quickly. It’s a shame that this moment ultimately cost him his life at the hands of Alpha (Samantha Morton), but I’m sure Henry would be proud to know that he was able to save Lydia from a life of abuse and welcome her into a community where she can be comfortable and loved by the people around her.
